My party is off to a slow start today, but I’ll catch up. It’s the Third Annual Blog Cookie Exchange. If you’re wondering what’s going on, here’s the basic formula:
Favorite holiday recipes
Special traditions
Favorite gift to give
What you wear when you don your gay apparel 🙂
But really, you can write or post pix of anything that tells us how you celebrate the holidays, or your favorite memories, or your wishiest wishes . . . whatEV.
(The Blind Boys of Alabama are singing Christmas carols behind me, on my CD player.)
Recipes are not all that much fun around here this year, because I am doing a “gluten-free” diet as a potential treatment for WTF Disease.
::tangent::it’s a long shot; it is not likely to help, but it’s all I’ve got. I’ll explain more in a less festive post on a less festive day!::end tangent::
This is one that I found and have not yet tried, but I shall:
3 Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies
1 c. smooth peanut butter
1/2 c. white granulated sugar
1 egg
Preheat
STOP THE MADNESS!!!! I can’t give you a recipe I haven’t even tried!!!! Be right back . . . .
OK. They’re not half bad! Sweet little peanut butter bites. What’s not to like?
oven to 325.
Mix everything together well and form 24 balls with a heaping teaspoon. Place evenly on ungreased cookie sheet and then press each ball down with fork.
Bake for exactly 15 minutes, no longer. Remove from oven and let cool enough to transfer to baking rack. CAUTION: Do not let them cool toooo much before removing from baking sheet, or they will STICK!
And another recipe that I learned last year, although everyone else may already know it:
Instead of making Mimosas with champagne and oj, make Poinsettias, with champagne and cranberry juice. Mmmm.
Now. What else? Oh, remember Nana had a stroke a couple of months ago? Well, as part of her rehab, she was told to make a craft, in an effort to exercise her hands/fingers, etc. So she decided to frame a bunch of old family pictures, mostly of kids and grandkids, and now she has one whole tree in her house that’s a frame tree:
I just love it! Especially this branch:
One of the gifts I’ll be giving this year is this little pocket mirror:
I got them for some of LG’s teachers. Always on the lookout for teacher gifts that they don’t already have a zillion of.
Last night, we enjoyed one of our very favorite holiday traditions: the kid’s Christmas concert. This takes many forms, depending on the age of the performing children. The church Christmas play, “Cookin’ up Christmas,” will be next Sunday, with LG playing a “Rachel Ray” character. Last night was her chorus concert, along with a Chamber Choir and two concert bands from her school. It was all absolutely lovely. Especially the part where the one little girl went up to introduce the next song, an African-American spiritual entitled, “Mary, Mary Had-a But One Child,” but the “-a” after the “Had” threw her — she pronounced it with a long AY — and then she was confused and paused for just a second, so it came out: Mary Had A Butt (pause pause pause) One Child! Jif and I were no good for the rest of that selection, snorking and shaking . . . on accounta we’re twelve. I’m telling you, even if you don’t have kids, find a kids’ holiday program in town. The most entertainment for your money, guaranteed.
This topic reminds me of the year our little church friend, about 4 years old, was eager to show off her newly gained knowledge of human reproduction. The pastor asked the children gathered around for the children’s Christmas Eve sermon, “Where was Jesus born?” Someone said “In Bethlehem.” Pastor was looking for “in a manger,” so she said, “Yes, but . . . smaller . . . ” and our little friend’s voice rang out loudly in the candle-lit sanctuary, “IN THE UTERUS!!” The congregation twittered while the pastor, for the only time in my memory, struggled to find words . . . “Uh . . . yes, but . . . bigger . . .”
I haven’t shown you this gay apparel before, even though it’s several years old. These are my holiday jammies. They’re festive and slippery:
Finally, I’ll leave you with our this year’s Christmas card. The images on the front were both created last year, with help and inspiration from blogfriends:
And this is the message inside, which I sincerely send to you, my friends:
Last Christmas, LG left Santa a camera and a note asking that he take a picture of himself by our tree.
And he did!The Spirit of Christmas is the reminder that wonderful things that can’t possibly happen . . . do happen.
Wishing you a season and a year of wonderful impossibilities made possible.
Jif, Susie and LG
(and Biscuit, the red-nosed bad dog)Jeremiah 32: 27
If you posted something for the cookie exchange, let me know in comments. And please visit everyone who comments here saying they posted for the exchange!
Well, look at this lovely post you’ve put up. Well done! I might have to try that cookie recipe.
And always remember, if you don’t have a brainy idea you can always have a butt!
Love you, sis!
I brought the Vodka again this year.
Jesus was born in the Uterus. I think I may have heard that song.
squirl, believe me, sis, I always have had and always will have A BUTT! World without end, Amen. 🙂
william, I think you may have written that song.
Peanut butter, sugar, and egg? What’s not to like?! Dip ’em in chocolate and you’ll really be in business!
I’m going to be thinking about Mary’s butt all day.
I posted about some family decorations–come on over and have a look. Hope you don’t mind that I didn’t have time to make cookies.
Favorite things about Christmas are:
1. Eggnog
2. Christmas Vacation with Chevy Chase, we watch this movie every year on Friday after Thanksgiving while putting up the Christmas Tree.
Gluten-Free, let me do some checking on recipes, I am sure I have something that would make any sweet tooth happy!!
I agree with Sharkey, chocolate on them cookies would be divine.
How about the song
“Ovary Maria”
Susie,
Here is my recipe for Eskimo Cookies
Ingredients:
1 cup – Butter or Margarine (softened) (I like it melted)
4 tbsp – Water
1 tsp – Vanilla Extract
6 tbsp – Cocoa Powder (3 Tablespoons of Nestle Quik can be substituted for the Cocoa Powder)
1 ½ cup – Granulated Sugar
4 cups – Quick-Cooking Oats
Powdered Sugar
Flaked Coconut
Chopped Nuts
Method:
Cream butter with water and vanilla.
Add sugar, cocoa, and oatmeal, mix well.
Roll into 1″ balls.
Add more water if necessary to make the dough stick together. Refrigerate for at least an hour
Divide the balls in half.
Roll half the balls in confectioners’ sugar and coconut, then roll the other half in the chopped nuts.
Refrigerate until serving.
This is a no-bake recipe.
Enjoy!!
My daughter loves this recipe, cause she can roll them out and get messy at the same time. Anything with chocolate is good with her.
Well, Susie, I’m in tears here; your post made me cry for some reason, though I can’t even pinpoint which part it was that got to me. (I think I’m just a bit of an emotional basketcase lately.) I do know it wasn’t “Mary had A Butt,” because that part cracked my shit right up. Hee.
I love your holiday jammies! So pretty and festive! And your family’s Christmas card is just beautiful…the pictures and the sentiment. Lovely.
Love. Hugs. Prayers.
shawkey, first, you are my FAIRY FREAKIN’ GODMOTHER! Chocolate dipped? I just happen to have one of those microwavy things of chocolate that I used for strawberry dipping for my work party the other day! I have now eaten 5 peanut butter cookies dipped in chocolate. And I need a nap. But my chocolatey face is smiling at you 🙂
I just LOVE your silvery tree, especially with the original box, instructions, etc. Christmas perfection.
aprilz, thank you, that sounds yummy! And we have to watch Christmas Vacation, too. And A Christmas Story — because we love us some Major Awards.
william, we sing that every year as we enjoy our Chocolate Chip Ovarians. 🙂
ladybug, thanks, honey. I don’t need much of an excuse to cry these days; I don’t even try to make excuses any more. I wish you and your lovely family the very merriest Christmas ever. 🙂
I’m here, Susie! I brought Wassail and Ginger Snaps! You can have the Wassail with or without rum!
Uterus…it’s not just for breakfast anymore.
Now that I’ve ruined everyone’s appetite, can I have the rest of those peanut butter cookies?
Hi Susie. I’m being an environmentalist for Christmas this year. I recycled my last year’s Cookie Exchange post! (Well, at least I did something, right?)
At least I didn’t ruin anyone’s appetite.
I hope.
I brought shrimp dip!
Thanks for hosting, Susie. There’s always such a warm, welcoming ambiance here.
Only 20 minutes before it stops being Wednesday so I nearly missed the party but I did make it! Bibbles of a random nature over at my place. 🙂
Hey, “Where are all the party people at?”
Oh, well, we have quality if not quantity.
amy, I think I will take your wassail to my SIL’s on Christmas day, so I can sing, “Here we come a’wassailing,” without anyone hitting me.
bucky, you are truly horrifying. You sicken people and then take their cookies? May God have mercy on your soul.
karen, recycling is good 🙂 I’m just happy you participated. Looks like I’ve been crossed off a lot of Christmas lists this year!
kalki, you were held for moderation! I hope they didn’t strip search you or anything like that. The shrimp dip looks devein. I mean, divine. (I kill myself.) Thank you my dear, for the dip and the kind words.
platy, I love you and your bibbles, whatever the hell that means 🙂 And happy day after your birfday, my dear.
Sorry to be so late to the party! West Coast and all. And I haven’t even had the chance to post my own party place. So far the only Christmassy thing I’ve made this year was my Dad’s chili, by request, for a party last night.
I may not get my own party hosted this year, so I’ll just enjoy this one. 🙂 I did bring peppermint schnapps. Any takers?
Thanks for hosting, lovely Susie! xxx
ok, I am officially designating myself the musical interlude here, sine we have incorporated traditional holiday carols (multicultural ones too) into the broadcast over at CMB.
William, I got your bucket here bro – I *remember* the mess last year.
😉
Aw c’mon Susie… once Bucky made ’em hurl, they didn’t want the cookies anymore anyway. (Hey Buckster, save me a cookie?)
Geez Sis, I’m sorry I totally bailed on your shindig. I’d give you excuses, but they’re from the real world, and nobody should have to deal with that while we’re here. So, instead of excuses, I brought gifts. None of the frankincense and myrhh variety, but how’s tequila? How ’bout wine? Anybody want some scotch? William… Bueller… Anyone?
well i just found out about the party late last night so i didn’t have time to prepare anything. but i have been visiting and i’ve got some yummy buckeyes here for anyone who stops by (although no post…too much to do, too little time). i’ve really enjoyed the pics, the recipes and the traditions today…hopefully between now and christmas, i’ll get something gay and festive up on mine!
so, eggnog and buckeyes for anyone stopping by..enjoy and merry christmas to everyone!!
p.s. the eggnog is non-alchoholic but there’s a bottle of rum on the counter. help yourself……i know i will!
Susie, they were mostly gentle. It’s my fault for not following the HTML regulations….either that, or I’ve got a bad look about me.
Between your veins and William’s ovaries, I’m cracking up over here!
Oooh, I have 90 minutes left before midnight!
I confess, I haven’t had the gumption to bake anything, so I went to Costco and picked up some Cape Cod Chicken/cranberry salad (take it slow, it’s rich and sweet) and some hearty Milton’s crackers upon which to balance that “salad.”
I’m also fond of fresh veggies—esp. cut celery and baby carrots—dipped in guacamole. Hey, it’s green. and I have it all ready to go.
Sorry about the Elderberry wine…my dh finished it off last night! I can’t buy more until the weekend (small local winery). So no red. 😦
But for lime green, I’m thinking that a good strong Margarita is a nice substitute for the missing wine. I’m told I make the best ones! (recipe from El Paso, TX)
As far as butts go…well, my dh & sons roamed a cemetary this fall and found a huge family tombstone. Yes, you guessed it: the family name was BUTT. Wish I could post the pic for you.
I didn’t post anything because I’m lame like that. However, I did take a package of chocolate chip cookie dough out of the freezer to thaw, but never got around to baking them. Had to go shopping instead. Do I get an “A” for effort?
Your story about the little kid in church reminds me of something Alex said loudly in church when he was about 2 years old. We were at a wedding, sitting near the back, thankfully, and the pastor said something about being “in the presence of the Lord.” Alex shouted out, “PRESENTS???” We were trying so hard not to laugh out loud, as were the people around us.
No offense Susie,
Eclectic has a hot tub and Bucky said she wanted to teach every one about muff diving or something. Let’s all go there for a bit. Anyone in….anyone….?
Hee!! Kalki just made me think, “William Tell’s Ovaries”,
(which, now that I type it, just makes me feel stupid. But when it first flitted across my really over-tasked brain? It was hilarious, truly).
Nevermind. I think I’m going to join William and the gang in the hottub afterall. Hey Bucky? I’m pretty sure that’s not an approved use for that snorkel…
I’m a little late for the party… my apologies…
I brought some sugar cinnamon walnuts! Even my kids who don’t like nuts like these!
Here’s the recipe:
1 lb nuts (any kind – walnuts recommended)
2 cups white sugar
1/4 cup water
1/2 tablespoon cinnamon (more/less as desired)
Bring the sugar, cinnamon, water to a boil, dump in the nuts — stir until nuts are coated with the crystallized mixture. Turn off heat — stir a bit more.
Dump the whole mess onto a cookie sheet or other “long pan” to cool. (Can put in fridge or leave on counter, or put on the floor of the garge if it’s cooler)
Stir occasionally to keep nuts from clumping together
Put nuts in storage container and horde… or share… whatever you wish. That’s it. 🙂
I guess everyone is over at E’s hot tub… well, we’ll just eat the nuts by ourselves, ok Susie?
I usually get all sentimental at this time of year, not just because of the “season”, but because of the music that comes along with it. The song “White Christmas” reminds me of my grandpa — He taught me how to play this song on the piano he had. “Silver Bells” reminds me of the holiday album my Mom used to play every year. “Feliz Navidad” reminds me of the neighborhood I grew up in. “Sleigh Ride” reminds me of the year I worked at Kmart — the speakers were right about the checkout lanes — do you have any idea how often they played that song?!
My favorite winter treat is hot cocoa — with or without Bailey’s. 🙂 I’ve never tried it with Pepperming Schnapps, though Ern…
While I do enjoy the holidays, my very favorite part of them is the few days after the holiday — I usually take some time off work (while the kids are otherwise occupied with other activities) and just rest rest rest.
Love you muchly, Susie… I wish we could all get together in person…
Am I too late for the hot tub party? I’d like some scotch. And, Shari, I am so proud of you for actually typing William Tell’s Ovaries. You are definitely my sister.
I think this turned into a pretty nice party here. It’s a busy time of the year but there was a decent showing. Thanks for hosting again this year, Susie.
I have a box of sugar cookie mix that I bought last year. I still haven’t managed to get it out of the cupboard so don’t know if I’ll get em done this year either. Isn’t it supposed to be the thought that counts!
Oh, and I forgot the wonderful new recipe I just printed off. I might give that a try in 2010. But I think I’m getting this Christmas spirit thing. lol
CircusKelli should try Butterscotch schnapps in the Hot Cocoa for a Hot Scotcher, mmm, my favorite.
Susie, looks like the party is off to a nice start.
I missed the party, too much wine the night before. Well not really but it sounded good. There is no such thing as too much wine.
I love the photos on the tree, that is my favorite part.
Sorry I’m so late – love your fancy jammies, Susie!! 🙂
[…] 13, 2007 by lawyerchik1 Yes. I blew it. Susie had this wonderful party yesterday, and I totally missed it. I […]
Sorry I disappeared for a bit. I was cleaning the cookies out of the hot tub.
ern, nice to see you. My real life Christmasing is in low gear, too. Hoping to step it up soon.
operagal, thanks for the lovely toonz. And the bucket — I knew I was forgetting something.
shari, with my gluten-free holiday, all I can have is whine. I mean wine. And yes, real-life excuses are just crazy talk here.
robin, aw, I love buckeyes. I used to make them for an aunt who is no longer with us. She loved them more.
kalki, it’s probably the bad look. Or maybe the cavities. :p Although, now that you’re learning what to do in emergency-type sit-you-ayshuns, you’re very handy to have at such a shindig!
GGM, that all sounds delishus. I was once referred to a gastro doc named — I kid you not — Dr. Butt. I could not bring myself to go.
CB, of course you get an A. And Alex was very wise; we are always surrounded by the many presents of the Lord 😉
william, that’s very rude; and I would have expected nothing less of you. Let’s go.
shari, writing the first thing that flits across your brain is what blogging is all about. I have been coveting your hot tub. When you first announced it, I went looking for a You Tube video of Eddie Murphy doing his James Brown in a HOT TUB! But I couldn’t find it 😦
CK, I can vouch for the delishusness of your nuts. (I wouldn’t say that to just anybody.) Gotta love a recipe that includes “dump the whole mess.” I get sentimental about some Christmas songs too. I just ordered a CD that I saw over at AmytheMom’s, because of the nostalgia factor 🙂
squirl, my pleasure, dear. Thank you for your presence 🙂
risingrainbow, no worries, there’s always plenty of food here 🙂
aprilz, mmm, butterscotch.
nina, you’re right on time. I love the photo tree, too. Just delightful.
lawyerchik, not late. That’s one of the best things about an online party. It’s always going on. (Because it’s pretend. Shhhh.)
I MISSED OUT THIS YEAR! We had our department party at work that lasted about 500 hours (well, only until 8 PM but when you get up at 4 AM, that’s a long day).
I’VE BEEN CHEATED! I DEMAND A DO-OVER!
I love the cookie recipe – how can you go wrong when they’re so freakin’ simple? Can I use my E-Z Bake Oven for ’em?
Ok, here is your
official holiday tune a truly amazing butchering of the Messiah accompaniment.
As the post says, its amazing that the choir held it together as well as they did. Me? I would have passed out from laughing.
A very short mp3 is at the end of the post
Why is it always ME left alone in the hot tub, holding the snorkel?
I need a drink.
HA! The blog cookie exchange is what got me thinking blogging again. So pleased to see it alive and well. I am still using Squirls brownie recipe 🙂
Your Christmas card is fantastic and it was sure nice of Santa to do that last year.
Have a very wonderful Christmas with your family Susie. You deserve all the joy in the world.
Tag!
lol, Dr. Butt.
My dh has known 2 urologists, named (yes, truly!!)….
Dr. Finger and Dr. Bagg.
Hmmmm, one to check the prostate and one to take care of the vasectomy….
